What is Butyl Rubber?
Butyl rubber, also known as isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR), is a general purpose, synthetic rubber and a copolymer of isobutylene with isoprene. This material is produced by polymerization of about 98% of isobutylene with about 2% of isoprene. Butyl rubber offers exceptional shock absorption as well as low resistance to heat, weather, ozone, abrasion, tearing, chemical corrosion and more. Butyl rubber is also impermeable to air. As a result, it is incredibly useful in applications requiring airtight rubber. Its strength, flexibility and low gas permeability also make it ideal for vacuum sealed and high-pressure applications. Butyl’s first widespread application was tire inner tubes, which continues to be a main application for the material to this day. Butyl rubber is a uniquely versatile synthetic rubber. However, it is not recommended for applications with exposure to petroleum oils.

Qualiform mixes these fibers directly into the butyl, so it can offer increased wear resistance, durometer, abrasion resistance, toughness and performance properties.
