What is Neoprene Rubber?
Neoprene Rubber or Polychloroprene (CR) is a multifaceted synthetic rubber with excellent resistance to oil, petroleum and weathering. It also provides good UV stability, ozone stability, chemical stability, flexibility in a wide temperature range and exceptional abrasion resistance. Neoprene is most often used in the production of electrical insulation, automotive fan belts, laptop sleeves and a variety of other industries and applications. The production of neoprene rubber involves the free-radical polymerization of chloroprene. However, commercial production used free-radical emulsion polymerization. These processes are initiated with potassium persulfate. Then, metal oxides, bifunctional nucleophiles and thioureas cross-link individual polymer strands. Neoprene also offers some advantages over natural rubber. Although natural rubber has some superior mechanical properties, neoprene offers much better resistance to degradation. Therefore, neoprene is the ideal material for demanding applications including hoses, gaskets, tubing and corrosion-resistant coatings.Advantages of Neoprene Rubber
- Exceptional physical toughness
- Heat resistance
- Hydrocarbon oil resistance
- Sun, ozone and weathering resistance
- Wide temperature range for continuous use
- Superior flame retardant properties relative to hydrocarbon-based elastomers
- Resistance to twisting and flexing damage
- Versatile compounding capabilities
